Automatons at the local grocer

So, I went to the Real Canadian Superstore, my friend Gary's favorite place to shop, and discovered that they have now installed self-serve checkouts.

Good thing this happened now... in my younger days at Superstore, I remember flirting with some of the girls that ran the checkout counters. But with these new checkouts, the United Food & Commercial Workers union has something to get all riled up about since self-serve checkouts take jobs away from rank and file union members.

As for the checkouts, I relished the chance to play cashier for a day, as I scanned and bagged my own items. The checkout is quite easy to use, and took about the same time as a regular cashier. A supervisor oversees the customers and helps anyone having problems with the machines. Add to the fact that there was no lineup at all. Lately, that's been changing, though... some people find the new machines hard to use.

I think self serve checkouts are a fabulous idea... after all who hasn't wanted to push random buttons and use a scanner, without having to deal with the potentially crabby cashiers who have seen a bizillion rude obnoxious and time deprived customers. Frankly, this world has become far too self-sufficient and technological to appreciate the smiling face of a cash clerk. Having been in that position I can honestly say it's a bit overrated, despite my efforts to be courteous to those who desire to buy things from me, its hard work!!! And having talked to many others in retail and the like, they would all agree, its the worse place to be right now especially with all those plunging numbers!
theres my tidbit!

With all the thieves that usually hang out in this store, I guess they will love this new feature!

just wait until RFID comes into mainstream... a few years from now. All you'll have to do is put your shopping cart under a huge scanner and it will use the RFID tags on each product (Radio Frequency ID) to identify everything from expiry date to product price in a matter of seconds. Now THAT would be impressive. And who's on the leading edge? Why, the same store that hires senior citizens to greet you as you enter the store...

WalMart.
